The CIP Program, originally called the CIP Project, located in the School of Law, received initial funding in 2002 and enjoyed subsequent renewal through the current fiscal year. Executive management of the grant is through The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As the project expanded, on-going activities were leveraged to generate new funding that matured the project scope to address unexplored areas of critical infrastructure protection. By 2004, the CIP Project grant had evolved into a family of projects under the overall umbrella of the CIP Program.
