The CIP Project grant is used to fund basic and applied research as well as support information and outreach activities related to the key components of the national research agenda. Among the many topics explored, key areas of focus have been cyber security, physical security, information sharing between public and private sectors, regional, state and local issues and privacy concerns. As the project expanded, on-going activities were leveraged to generate new funding that matured the project scope to address unexplored areas of critical infrastructure protection. By 2004, the CIP Project grant had evolved into a family of projects under the overall umbrella of the CIP Program.
