CIP Program research staff are exploring the topic of "critical infrastructure" from an international perspective. The maps below depict 1) various definitions of critical infrastructure, and 2) critical infrastructure sectors on four continents. Instructions for downloading and viewing the maps interactively are found at the bottom of this page.

International Definitions of Critical Infrastructure

This updated map (click to access map file) includes definitions of critical infrastructure from 11 countries, as well as the European Union (EU), North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the Assessment for Critical Infrastructure Protection (ACIP), a project funded by the European Commission. 

The definitions are found, along with source information, in the notes field to the right of each topic. Mindjet MindManager Viewer must be downloaded to view the notes fields.

International Critical Infrastructure Sectors

This map (click to access map file) features a list of critical infrastructure sectors for 19 countries, organized by continent. A list of sectors developed by the EU under the European Programme for Critical Infrastructure Protection (EPCIP) is also included in the map.

By downloading Mindjet MindManager Viewer, the map can be easily navigated and source information may be viewed in the notes fields.

Instructions for Downloading and Viewing Maps

The follow steps should be taken to view these maps interactively:

1. Download Mindjet MindManager Viewer for free at http://www.mindjet.com/us/download/mindmanager_viewers/index.php?s=2.
2. Click on the map links above and save the map(s) to your desktop. The maps will each download as a ZIP file.
3. Close the ZIP file and rename the file extension (of the entire folder) from ".zip" to ".mmap".
4. Once the file extension is renamed, the file icon will change and allow you to open the map file by double-clicking on it as you would any other folder or file. Through the Mindjet MindManager Viewer, topics within the map can be expanded and collapsed and notes fields can be accessed.
