Numerous research projects have addressed the history of critical infrastructure protection (CIP) in the United States. A timeline of key events impacting CIP was developed as part of the CIP Oral History Project. A non-database dependent CIP timeline, covering events from 1994 - 2003, was also developed and is available for download. This timeline will be expanded, and additional interactive maps depicting the history of CIP will be posted to this webpage in the future.
Key CIP Events in the United States (1994 - 2003)
This timeline (click to access map file) features select terrorist incidents, issuance of Executive Orders and Presidential Directives, creation of entities to address CIP matters, release of strategic documents, and other notable events.
Additional information may be found in the notes field to the right of each topic. Mindjet MindManager Viewer must be downloaded to view the notes fields.
Instructions for Downloading and Viewing Maps
The follow steps should be taken to view this map (timeline) interactively:
Click on the map link above and save the map to your desktop. The map will download as a ZIP file.
Close the ZIP file and rename the file extension (of the entire folder) from ".zip" to ".mmap".
Once the file extension is renamed, the file icon will change and allow you to open the map file by double-clicking on it as you would any other folder or file. Through the Mindjet MindManager Viewer, topics within the map can be expanded and collapsed and notes fields can be accessed.
If you experience difficulties accessing this map, please ensure that the file extension is renamed (you may need to adjust the viewing options for files on your computer). For assistance, please contact Liz Jackson, Senior Associate, Special Projects.
