CIP Program research staff are examining the composition of various critical infrastructure and key resource (CI/KR) sectors and visualizing sector information in interactive maps. These maps are, in essence, snapshots of the sectors as defined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) and associated documents.
Through the CIP Program’s Sector Mapping Project, sector maps offer a blueprint of how each CI/KR sector is structured, how it assesses risks, etc. Each map has a similar configuration, and includes topics such as structure, authorities, information sharing, key issues/initiatives, risk management, and Sector-Specific Plan (as publicly available). Information found under the numerous topics and subtopics addresses assets, owner/operators, interdependencies, public-private partnerships, sector economics and statistics, and more. The specific content of each sector map will differ due to availability of information and the breadth of various sectors.
The maps below depict the following sectors/subsectors: Banking & Finance, Nuclear, Oil & Natural Gas, and Water. Additional maps are under development.
By downloading Mindjet MindManager Viewer, the maps can be easily navigated and supporting information may be viewed in the notes fields. Instructions for downloading and viewing the maps interactively are located at the bottom of this page.
Click on the map links above and save the map(s) to your desktop. The maps will each download as a ZIP file.
Close the ZIP file and rename the file extension (of the entire folder) from ".zip" to ".mmap".
Once the file extension is renamed, the file icon will change and allow you to open the map file by double-clicking on it as you would any other folder or file. Through the Mindjet MindManager Viewer, topics within the map can be expanded and collapsed and notes fields can be accessed.
If you experience difficulties accessing a map, please ensure that the file extension is renamed (you may need to adjust the viewing options for files on your computer). For assistance, or for any questions related to the Sector Mapping Project, please contact James Creel, Project Associate.
Additional information on the Sector Mapping Project can be found in the October 2007 issue of The CIP Report.
